Jim Dinning says he doesn’t want to run, but adds “I never say, never” when addressing the question whether he plans to enter the upcoming fray for Premier Ed Stelmach’s job as leader of the Progressive Conservative party.
If the 58-year-old Calgary businessman and U of C Chancellor does run, he says it would be so the leadership campaign has a progressive candidate.
It would also set up a rematch for the party’s leadership which Dinning and Ted Morton first waged five years ago, with the party eventually electing Stelmach to the post.
Dinning says he’s been receiving plenty of encouragement since the Premier announced plans to step down earlier in the week. But he adds he has lots of time to make a decision.
So far, Morton has declared he’s running for the post. Deputy Premier Doug Horner says he’s considering it.
The Calgary Herald reports Justice Minister Alison Redford and Education Minister Dave Hancock are also contemplating a run, while former minister Gary Mar, now a diplomat in Washington, is being encouraged to enter the fray by party supporters. But the Herald also reports former federal cabinet minister Jim Prentice is not planning to run for the position.
