Airport tunnel costs released

A long-awaited report on the costs of building a tunnel at YYC has been tabled.

The price tag varies from $295-million to more than $1-billion.

City council is being told the tab to build the tunnel and tie it into the existing road network would be cheaper if construction begins before the new runway at the airport is built.

Ward 3 Alderman Jim Stevenson is confident his council colleagues will see the wisdom in breaking ground this year even if that means borrowing and taking money out of other transportation projects.

Estimates hold that if the city does not built the tunnel, it will still have to spend more than $300-million to upgrade roads in the area to accommodate the new traffic flow following the closure of Barlow Trial.

If the city wants to build the tunnel after the runway is already open, the tab would come in between $1.5 and $1.6-billion.
