Canadians told to leave Egypt ASAP

All Canadians still in Egypt are being warned to leave the country as soon as they can.

A statement from Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon says the federal government’s efforts to evacuate Canadians still in Egypt will continue, with another chartered flight scheduled to leave Cairo Thursday.

Those taking evacuation flights will still have to pay the federal government back for the efforts.

Meanwhile, the House of Commons called an emergency debate Wednesday night on the crisis in Egypt.

Liberal MP Bob Rae called for the debate, saying he thinks it’s important for the house to discuss the events taking place in Egypt.

Cannon spoke to his counterpart in Egypt on Wednesday afternoon.  Cannon says he urged an orderly transition to economic and democratic reform in Egypt.

The minister says he was told that Canadians still in Egypt will be allowed to leave the country.

He says the system that is in place for evacuations is working well.

Cannon said he said that Canada would like the violence to stop but stopped short of asking the government to speed up the process.
