The end of the line is here for a Calgary Flames fan favorite.
Craig Conroy announced his retirement Friday, officially ending his lengthy on-ice hockey career. The entire Flames team attended his conference.
“I consider myself lucky that my career brought me and my family to the city of Calgary and the Flames organization,” says Conroy.
“I’d like to thank the Flames organization and specifically our ownership group for putting such a strong emphasis on family, community involvement and their commitment to icing a winning hockey team. I leave the ice content and prepared for the next stage of my career in the game.”
The 39-year-old was waived by the Flames last week. Conroy was left with the option of retiring or reporting to the farm team in Abbotsford, B.C.
Conroy finishes his NHL career with over 1,000 games played and 540 points. He wore the “C” before handing it over to current captain, Jarome Iginla, in 2003.
The forward was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1990 and also spent time with the St. Louis Blues and L.A. Kings.
Conroy is remaining with the Flames organization as a special assistant to acting GM Jay Feaster.
