Environmentalists happy parks bill withdrawn

The Sierra Club is declaring victory in its battle to stop Bill 29.

The legislation that would have changed the governance of Alberta parks has been withdrawn from the spring sitting of the legislature.

“It was going to put it all in the hands of the cabinet and the minister, which operate behind closed doors, and just based on their opinions.  You can’t hold them accountable in the legislature,” says Dianne Pachal with the Sierra Club.

“We’ve pulled the parks back from the brink of disaster but now we’ve got to work on what’s really needed and that’s new parks and the regulations to protect the natural areas,” says Pachal.

Pachal says Albertans want more green spaces and assurances those areas remain free of industrial or commercial development.
