Starving for attention

This week is Eating Disorder Awareness Week.

A recent survey shows nearly 33 per cent of girls and a quarter of boys age 12 to 17 say they have been teased about their weight.

Dr. Shelly Russell-Mayhew with the University of Calgary tells 660News people of all ages worry about their body image and that’s why there is a week dedicated to talking about the issue.

“It’s important to bring to awareness and give pause to the large number of boys and girls and women and men that are chronically dieting or chronically trying to change their bodies and suffer from some kind of body preoccupation,” she says.

Dr. Russell-Mayhew will be holding a lecture Tuesday night at the University of Calgary at MacEwan Hall, room 307. The lecture will begin at 7:00 p.m.
