Property assessment appeal deadline rapidly approaching

Calgary home and business owners have less than a month to review and appeal their 2011 property assessment notice.
City spokesman Stuart Dallies tells 660News inquires are actually down a little this year compared to last year.
“Website visits on Calgary.ca/assessment, they’re a little bit up compared to last year, about two per cent more website visits than we had in 2010,” says Dallies. (But) “the number of phone calls that we’re getting to our 403-268-2888 inquiry line are down a bit by about 8 per cent.”
Last year about 5,500 assessment complaints were filed with the city. That was down from more than 12,000 in 2008.
Dallies says most inquiries about assessments and property values are often solved with a phone call.
“Should a customer’s question require some more information, have a bit more complexity to it, then we schedule a follow up appointment with an assessor, but that would happen in less than 50 per cent of the phone calls that we actually receive,” he adds.
The city mailed out 472,000 assessments on January 4th.
The deadline to file an assessment appeal is March 7th.
