Tory popularity on the rise

A new poll shows support for the provincial Progressive Conservative Party is up at the expense of Alberta’s Wildrose Alliance.
According to the numbers, the Tories have the backing of 38 per cent of decided voters, 26 per cent like the Wildrose, 22 per cent prefer the Liberals and the NDP come in fourth at 10 per cent.
The Environics survey, published in The Calgary Herald, puts the number of undecided voters at 18 per cent.
Pollsters say the resignation of Premier Ed Stelmach didn’t appear to affect the results of the poll which was conducted over a 10-day period in late January, during which time Stelmach announced he was going to step down.
Mount Royal University Political scientist, Keith Brownsey, tells 660News he was shocked by the results.
Brownsey says the numbers also show support for the Tories is up again in rural Alberta.
If an election was held today, 43 per cent of people in rural ridings in the province would vote P.C., an increase of more than 10 points from November.
In contrast, support for the Wildrose Alliance in rural Alberta is down eight points from the fall to 29 per cent.
