Calgary “safe jail” on hold

Budget cuts are putting a project on hold that is high on the list of thing to do for Calgary’s top cop.

Chief Rick Hanson has been advocating for a “safe jail” since 2009 but says it could be a while before Calgary sees such a facility.

He says he has a location picked-out for a building that would house mentally ill people and addicts.

Hanson says these people cause the majority of Calgary’s crime, so a jail run as a detox facility makes sense.
