Calgary sprawl not sustainable

A new report says rapid growth is putting a strain on Calgary’s economic, environmental and social well-being.
Among Canada’s large cities Calgary finished in a tie with Ottawa for third place, behind Toronto and Edmonton.
Only Montreal had a worse score than Calgary.
Toronto-based Corporate Knights Magazine examined five different categories ranging from ecological integrity to infrastructure.
Calgary’s score was even worse than a number of medium-sized cities, including Vancouver and Saskatoon.
Ward 11 Alderman Brian Pincott says he’s not surprised by the findings.
Pincott tells 660News Calgary was built for the car and sadly, everybody has been buying single-family homes in the suburbs.
But not all is lost; Pincott believes the ideas contained in the Plan It Calgary report will curb the sprawl and help the city build up, rather than out, easing the economic and environmental strain.
