SkyTrain turnstile construction to start in a few months

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Where are those turnstiles they promised? TransLink says renovations on Expo Line will start in a few months so construction on fare gates can begin.
Turnstile and smart card work was promised to begin in the spring of 2010. A year later, Ken Hardie with TransLink says, “The delay in getting the construction started has a lot to do with original Expo Line stations.”
“We’re going to have to renovate; in doing that, you have to do design work and survey [the stations], have things in place to work around the disruptions there will be to the customers,” he explains.
Hardie still estimates the project will cost $170 million with $100 million of that coming from TransLink. But NDP Transportation Critic Harry Bains doesn’t believe it. “I think it will be much higher than they are anticipating.”
“Ideas are imposed by the provincial government on TransLink, [which is] then left scrambling to find money,” he adds.
