Stelmach prepares to reveal exit strategy

Alberta politicians get back to work Tuesday with the speech from the throne to open the spring sitting of the legislature.

Premier Ed Stelmach is also expected to reveal a road map for his final days in office in the speech.

For many, though, the focus will be the new budget; set to be delivered Thursday by Treasury Board president Lloyd Snelgrove and expected to contain a third consecutive deficit.

Bill 1 will also be introduced; a piece of legislation the government says will make the province more competitive and help to prop up the economy.

It’s an unprecedented time for the province, as three political parties choose a new leader this year, including the Tories, and government officials will try to deal with a record $5-billion deficit.

The premier has pledged that the operating budget will be balanced with the spending hike to come in well below the recommended target of inflation plus population growth.
