Canada imposes sanctions against Libya

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Harper says Canada is imposing sanctions on Libya that go beyond what the UN Security Council agreed to this weekend.

Harper says Canada is imposing the UN sanctions that include an arms embargo and a freeze of the assets of Libyan leader Moammar Ghadaffi and his family.

He hopes the actions will help restrict access to money and weapons for those responsible for violence against the Libyan people.

Canada also announced today it has sent more military transport aircraft to the region to be on hand to aid in evacuation efforts. It’s estimated there are as many as 100 Canadians still in Libya, mostly oil workers.
