Canadian myths about poverty persist

The Salvation Army has released the results of an eye-opening poll on poverty.
The Angus Reid Survey found nearly 50 per cent of Canadians feel that if poor people really want to work, they can always find a job.
It also found 41 per cent believe the poor “take advantage” of any assistance they get and “do nothing” with the support provided.
About a quarter of Canadians believe that people are poor because they are lazy and have lower moral values.
Andrew Burditt with the Salvation Army says in an effort to dispel myths of poverty and the poor, they are launching what’s called the Dignity Project.
Burditt believes the initiative will not only inspire and educate the public about what it means to live in poverty, but also teach people what they can do to help.
