Education grant program funding slashed

A Tory MLA wants to know why money for a school grant program has been cut in half.

The Alberta Initiative for School Improvement helps individual school districts design special programs in reading, math, technology and outdoor education.

The program will have its budget slashed to $40-million next September.

Lesser Slave Lake MLA Pearl Calahasen tells The Calgary Herald she’s relieved the program hasn’t been completely axed.

The education minister says the cut was a difficult but necessary choice, given last week’s budget.
