Mexico remains hot spot destination despite violence

Mexico remains a hot spot for Canadians looking to bask in the glow of warm weather and white sand beaches.

Nearly a million Canadians visit the country every year.

However, an article in the latest issue of Maclean’s magazine is examining the ongoing war with drug cartels.

Senior writer Michael Petrou tells 660News the biggest problem is corruption at all levels of enforcement, from police to politicians.

Petrou says, even the media is afraid to report on the problems because more journalists have died in Mexico than in Afghanistan in the past four to five years.

Petrou says the drug war in Mexico has killed around 35,000 people since 2006.
