January building permit values are up

Building permit applications in Calgary for the first month of 2011 are more than triple last year’s numbers.

The estimated construction value of permits for January 2011, tip the scales at $771.5 million.

However, the bulk of that value is due to a large application for terminal improvement at the airport.

Once that’s taken out of the equation residential and non-residential categories are lower than average values compared to January 2010.

Non-residential permits totaled just over $663.7 million and residential permits were down 16 per cent.

For the month of January there were three projects over $10 million, including airport terminal improvement, a new office building and improvement and expansion to the Calgary Winter Club.
