Extra cash improves ” Roads ” snow and ice battle

The decision to boost funding for Calgary’s roads department appears to have been a good one.

The director of roads tells 660News last year his department spent almost $32 Million dollars improving traction on city streets.

Ryan Jestin says they used about 80 per cent of the money council made available from it’s fiscal stability reserve to supplement their $28  Million dollar budget.

He says about 30 to 40 per cent of the money they spend is to pay staff, 30 per cent is for equipment and the rest is for materials like salt and sand.

Jestin says next month council will be given a breakdown on expenditures and that will determine his department’s budget moving forward.

Later this month results of a citizens survey regarding snow and ice removal will also be released.

He says for the first time in his 5 years on the job, his department actually got some compliments from drivers.
