Air Canada has announced it’s adding a fuel surcharge to some of its flights to offset the soaring price of jet fuel, brought on by rising world oil prices.
The airline is slapping a $10 fuel surcharge on one-way economy class flights and a $15 charge for executive class tickets for flights to the U.S.
A fee will also be imposed on international flights, but that charge will vary depending on the destination.
Calgary Aviation Analyst Rick Erickson tells 660News airlines have no choice but to pass along higher operating costs to their customers.
Erickson says if the price of oil continues to rise, Canadians could see fuel surcharges imposed on domestic flights as well.
Many American airlines, including Delta and Southwest have also tacked on fuel surcharges of up to $45.
Calgary-based airline WestJet has yet to announce any fuel surcharges.
