Safety first for elementary school students

Children in Grades 4 to 7 get a lesson today in safety as the City stages its annual Safety Expo.
Forty-one interactive and educational exhibits have been set up around the atrium of City Hall.
“We cover all aspects,” a City spokesperson tells 660News. “If it’s not with a workshop, then it’s with a booth. If not that, then it’s small, 10-minute, informal training sessions that we’ve got.”
The Safety Expo covers a wide range of topics for youngsters.
“Make sure you have a fire escape plan for your family,” adds the Safety Expo spokesperson. “Of course, include your pets in that. We talk about dog bite prevention. We even talk about escalators, so keep loose clothing from the side of the escalators. Don’t sit on an escalator, and electricity of course.”
As part of the Safety Expo, individuals and groups are being recognized today with the Safer Calgary/Jim Gray Awards.
The awards recognize people, businesses, groups and communities that make Calgary a safer place to live, work and play.
This year the Youth award goes to Erin Woods School.
BikeCalgary wins the Community award; Centrecity Safety Impact Team, the Corporate honours, and the Individual award goes to Maggie MacKilop.
This year’s winners were recognized during a noon-hour luncheon at Old City Hall.
