Local Taiwanese community helping those in Japan

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – The local Taiwanese community is coming together to raise money to help people affected by the earthquake in Japan.
While the 10 Metro Vancouver organizations have raised money before, this will be the first campaign for a place other than their home country. Yu Wen Chen with the Taiwanese-Canadian Association says the disaster in Japan reminds her of the “921 earthquake” in Taiwan about a decade ago.
“What’s happened [in Japan], we feel so close to us; the feeling is so similar,” she says. “Japan is a really good neighbour; there’s a good relationship with Taiwan.”
“We really need to help each other,” Chen adds. “How much money we’ll raise, we don’t know. But we want to tell the Japanese we care.”
