Need for tailings ponds may disappear

Tailings ponds might soon be a relic of the past when it comes to oilsands mining.
A new technology developed at Penn State University in the U.S. could erase the need for the toxic lakes.
The new process uses liquid salt to separate the crude from the sand and needs less energy than the current process.
Tailings ponds were shoved into the international spotlight in April 2008 when images of over 1,600 dead and suffering ducks tarred in a Syncrude tailings pond made their way all over the world.
