New ride safety rules brought forth after midway crash

Amusement park ride owners now have to abide by stronger safety rules.
The Alberta government is putting the changes in place following a report into a midway ride that broke apart last year at the Calgary Stampede.
Ten teenagers were injured in the Scorpion incident.
Ride owners will now have to prove they’ve consulted with the manufacturer every time they make a significant repair, something the Scorpion ride’s owner did not do before the midway incident.
Calgary Stampede’s Doug Fraser tells 660News they feel the new regulations are well thought out.
“Safety is the first concern of the Calgary Stampede and we will look forward to implementing these recommendations to enhance our safety,” he says.
Older rides, as well as any that have evidence of metal fatigue will have to undergo stress tests to stay up and running.
Owners will also have to keep five years worth of ride inspection reports on-site.
