Future bleak locally for new teachers

The future is not as bright for new teachers in Calgary, which means most may have to leave the city to find a job.
One student finishing her Bachelor of Education will be among 400 University of Calgary students looking for teaching jobs.
She tells the Calgary Herald she will likely have to leave the city to find a position, since there are far fewer out there than she says she was led to believe when she first enrolled.
Facing a shortfall of nearly $62-million, the Calgary Board of Education announced this past week it would be eliminating 172 positions.
Though it mainly affects support staff, union rules dictate that many can bump new teachers from the queue. On top of that, the CBE said up to 200 teaching positions may also be at risk.
Nearly 200 were eliminated or went unfilled last year.
