Shining a light on knife violence

After losing a friend at the hands of a another friend two years ago, Chelsey Cusack and Wynny Sillito will shine a light on knife violence, Saturday afternoon, with the “Drop a knife and save life” campaign at Carburn Park.
The young women started the campaign in memory of David Dupuis, who died in a stabbing incident in 2009 at a McKenzie Towne condo. His friend, Richard Sikora, is now serving seven years for manslaughter.
Cusack and Sillito have raised $600-dollars through the sale of blue bracelets as part of the campaign. The money is earmarked for a program administered by the John Howard Society for children between the ages of 13 and 18 in, or at risk of finding themselves, in youth court.
Cusack tells the Calgary Herald, a lot of young people are carrying knives but aren’t aware of the consequences.
According to Statistics Canada, in 2009 there were 610 homicides in this country. More than a third were stabbing deaths, thirty more than shooting deaths.
Saturday’s event at Carburn Park, starts at 1:30 pm.
