Drivers urged not to speed with warmer temperatures

Drivers are being warned by the RCMP not to put the pedal to the metal as the temperature rises.

RCMP officers across the province are tabbing April as speed awareness month.

They say speeding is cited as a major factor in nearly a third of all motor vehicle crashes.

AMA’s Randy Loik tells 660News he’s not surprised police are starting to focus on speeders as the temperatures warm-up.

“With spring coming, of course, we’re going to see a lot more policing of speeds and so on, because people have a tendency to start speeding up when the roads dry up. So it’s important that you start being a little more careful and not exceed the speed limits, even if you want to.”

RCMP say they handed out close to $90 million worth of speeding tickets on Alberta highways between April 2009 and March 2010 and that’s not including major centres like Calgary and Edmonton.
