Southern Alberta highways slated for upgrades

The province is set to spend $1.7-billion this year to improve highways.

Trent Bancarz, with Alberta Transportation, tells 660News they’ll be working on Highway 2 south of Calgary.

“We’re going to be realigning and reconstructing about five and a half kilometres of Highway 2, just a bit north of Nanton,” he says. “We’re doing this in order to remove a railway overpass from the highway, because the overpass is no longer in use.”

Other highway renovations include:

-Highway 1 – selective repaving of 85 km between Bassano and Suffield

-Highway 23 – repaving 42 km between Mosleigh and High River

-Highway 41 – repaving 70 km between Highways 570 and 545 west of Empress

-Highway 56 – repaving 22 km between highway 1 and Hussar

-Highway 61 – widening and reconstruction of 14 km between Foremost and Etzikom

-Highway 529 – converting 20 km of road from gravel to pavement between the Little Bow Provincial Park access and Highway 845 east of Champion

-Highway 570 – repaving 60 km between Highways 876 and 886 near Big Stone

-Highway 885 – repaving 30 km between Highways 3 and 61 south of Bow Island

Bancarz says they’ll probably have to close some lanes and reduce speed limits in order to do their work.

Construction will begin in May and continue over the summer.
