Judge recommends changes following school bus death

An Alberta judge has made his recommendations following the fatality inquiry into the death of Mary Occena.
The nine year-old Calgary girl was killed in a school bus accident on Crowchild Trail while on her way to Third Academy.
Among the recommendations, changes to the hiring policy of schools and bus companies in the province.
The judge has also made recommendations of Alberta Transportation.
Judge Bruce Fraser says there is nothing that can be said that prevents this death from occurring, mainly because no one knows why the driver drifted onto the shoulder, colliding with a gravel truck.
He’s recommending random drug testing and physicals for school bus drivers.
Also Alberta Transportation has been asked to investigate the safety of the bus involved in the accident.
Spokesperson Heather Kaszuba says it’s something they will relay to the CSA.
“As you may be familiar, manufacturers build and certify small school buses meeting the engineering design standards of both transport Canada and the CSA,”
says Kaszuba.
