Careless smoking causes southeast fire

The Calgary Fire Department has determined that last week’s fire on Deerview Way was caused by a poorly extinguished cigarette.

The fire caused $900,000 damage, and endangered the lives of several people and animals.

Brian McAsey with the fire department tells 660News people have to be cautious of what they’re doing with their butts.

“Improperly discarded cigarettes are the number three cause of fires in Calgary and so that pretty sobering if you think about it. If you simply put out your cigarettes or smoking materials in the proper place this simply wouldn’t happen,” says McAsey.

Last year’s Millrise fire was also caused by a poorly extinguished cigarette. About 400 people were displaced because of that fire which caused several hundred thousand dollars damage.
