How much is too much?

The City of Calgary is hosting a couple of open houses this week to get public input regarding vehicle noise.
“What is the maximum allowable limit?,” wonders Bylaw boss Bill Bruce. “So the open houses will allow people to actually hear the different levels of auto sound and rate that.”
Similar open houses were held last November, but the City wants more input before drawing up a new noise bylaw.
“How loud is too loud for a vehicle, but it’s based on primary reception reading,” Bruce tells 660News about current standards. “So it’s based on somebody who’s got a complaint that the vehicles passing by their residence are too loud. We’re just revising the existing noise bylaw to set a specific limit. And that’s a big piece of what we’d like to talk to citizens about. If they think we do need to regulate it further, what is a reasonable limit?”
The first open house is being held Wednesday evening at the Scenic Acres School on 50 Scurfield Way Northwest. The second open house is scheduled for Thursday evening at the Wildwood School at 120 45th Street Southwest. Both open houses are open between 5pm and 8:30pm.
City Council has asked for a report on the noise bylaw by mid-May.
