The price of veggies and the taste of produce fresh from the garden are helping to drive a growing trend.
More and more people are starting to grow some of their own food in their yards and even on their balconies.
Urban agriculture expert David Tracey is the author of two books on how to grow things in the city.
In his latest book, Urban Agriculture: Ideas and Designs for the New Food Revolution, Tracey outlines how easy it is.
“We forgot how easy it really is to grow things. A lot of people are kind of intimidated by that or a little bit nervous that, because they kill their houseplants, they think they can’t grow a carrot. So part of the idea in the book is for me to sort of hand-hold them and walk them through and give them the steps they need to develop the confidence to actually grow, and eat what they grow,” says Tracey.
If you don’t have a yard or a balcony, he says you can grow herbs on a sunny windowsill.
There’s also a bit in the book about edible landscaping!
