Calgary social agency sets 3rd record in 6 months

One of Calgary’s social service agencies is seeing increasing demand, after setting three all-time record highs for service requests in just six months.

The Calgary Counselling Centre received 740 requests in March, following the previous records set in November, 2010 and January, 2011.

Dianna Campbell-Smith with the agency tells 660News, it’s a great sign that more people are reaching out.

She says, “Some of the top issues that come into the centre are ones that are often under-served, and people stay in those situations way too long. Now it looks like they are coming for help.”

After the long, cold winter, Campbell-Smith says she hopes the trend continues with people continuing to seek help into spring.

She adds, depression, stress and low self-esteem have been the most common requests for service, and they’ve managed to stay on top of demand by assigning a counsellor within 48 hours of contact.
