Public school board to open all-boys school

Calgary parents will be able to send their young sons to a public all-boys school starting next year.
The Calgary Board of Education says they’ve heard requests from parents of over 200 boys from all over the city, who would like to see such a school.
Kindergarten to Grade 5 will be available at the school in September with Grade 6 to be added the next year.
The CBE says the all-boys program will have a big focus on teaching students about what it means to be male in today’s culture and will use mentorship networks with successful men in order to do that.
Superintendent Naomi Johnson says while the curriculum will be similar to what’s found in any public school, it’s the teaching methods that will be different.
“There will be a lot of technology and it will be based on leadership,” she says. “Lots of physical fitness, wellness and indeed it will be a program that will personalize learning for each one of the boys.”
Johnson says that right now, it’s likely that both men and women will be on the staff.
Uniforms are being considered, but a final decision on what they will look like has not yet been made.
It’s not known yet where the school will be, although it will be in a building the CBE already has.
The CBE has run an all-girls school since 2004.
