Three Calgary firefighters nab curling gold

The Calgary Fire Department is celebrating a big win on home ice.

Three of its members were part of the winning Team Alberta at the Canadian Firefighters Curling National Championship that took place at the Ogden Legion.

The team was skipped by Olympic gold-medallist John Morris.

Brian McAsey, with the Fire Department, tells 660News even though Morris is an elite athlete, it wasn’t an unfair advantage.

“I don’t think so,” he says. “He really is a fire fighter, he’s been a fire fighter for probably a decade and one player can’t make you win or lose. Obviously he’s a great player, but they did play the first two games without him.”

Morris joined the team half way into the tournament.

Team Alberta scored four in the 7th end for an 11-5 win over Saskatchewan.

The Canadian Firefighters Curling Championship is Canada’s second oldest consecutive brier and raises funds for muscular dystrophy.
