First brouhaha of PC leadership race

Alison Redford and Gary Mar have squared off in the first verbal sparring match of the Provincial Progressive Conservatives’ leadership race.
Mar claims Redford’s plan to reform health care is an old idea he implemented while Health Minister, adding that targets set back in 2003 have virtually been met.
The brouhaha is over the delivery of what’s called primary care networks in which family doctors refer patients to appropriate specialists.
Mar says more funding is needed to improve the system.
Redford says her plan goes further and involves creating clinics that would take the stress off hospital emergency rooms, claiming 55 per cent of people in ER’s are there because that’s their only option.
Redford wants clinics, which would be open evenings, employing registered nurses, doctors, mental health professionals, physio-therapists and other health professionals.
