Suzanne Somers, who shot to fame in the 70’s TV series “Three’s Company,” will be in Calgary Wednesday.
Now 64, the actress and author is well-known for her advocacy surrounding health and wellness.
She’ll be here for the Power of Women speaker series, at the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts, which also features stars like Sigourney Weaver and broadcaster Leslie Stahl of 60 Minutes.
Somers tells 660News one of the things she’ll be talking about is perimenopause.
“Most women get their cancers in perimenopause. It doesn’t show up until menopause but it originates.. (there). That’s what happened with me. By the time they found my tumour, it had been growing for ten years. That means, that whole time I was in perimenopause when doctors just said ‘oh, you’re in perimenopause’ and sort of, waved it away as if it was no big deal. It’s a big deal!” says Somers.
Somers says each body has its own language.
“And we don’t listen to that language very often. I call it the Seven Drwarfs of Menopause! You know, Itchy, Bitchy, Sleepy, Sweaty, Bloated, Forgetful and All Dried Up! And any one one of those, you know an itch on your leg you normally wouldn’t call your doctor and say ‘my leg itches’ but it’s a symptom, a language of the body, saying ‘something’s not right here’ and it usually has to do with the fact that your hormones are imbalanced,” says Somers.
“The women my age, who are my friends, are walking around saying ‘I feel terrible, I can’t sleep’ and I’m thinking, wow, I sleep eight hours every night without drugs. I’m in a good mood all the time,” says Somers.
“I really owe all of this to the research I did myself on bioidentical hormones and how it put me back together,” she says.
The star has long been a proponent of controversial natural therapies consisting of creams, injections and supplements, along with bioidentical hormone replacement therapy.
