As we celebrate Earth Day Friday, it begs the question what will Alberta look like on Earth Day 20 years from now?
A land use expert, Brad Stelfox tells the Calgary Herald, Alberta’s population will have increased by 50 percent to 5.6 million by 2031. He adds Calgary’s population could swell to two million by that time.
An energy and environment economist at the University of Alberta, Andrew Leach says solar hot water in our homes will be an alternative energy source.
Dave Day, the City’s Director of Environmental Management, sees a C-train to Calgary International Airport, a new green fleet of city vehicles and a high-speed train to Edmonton.
Peter Tertzakian, Chief Energy Economist at Arc Financial, says Western Canada will be a global, not just North American, provider of oil and gas. He adds electricity will power more and more transportation and that electricity will come from natural gas and renewable energy sources.
Meantime, the Alberta Motor Association kicked off Earth Day, Friday, with a month-long campaign to collect, strip and recycle batteries.
The batteries are of the automotive and marine variety.
The AMA tells says batteries have a 97 per cent recycling rate and the process conserves raw materials that can be reused in the manufacture of new batteries.
Lube City locations are taking the old auto and marine batteries until May 22nd.
