Calgary Board of Education scraps mandatory second language requirement

Some big changes have been announced by the Calgary Board of Education.

As of this fall, it will no longer be mandatory for students in Grades 4-9 to complete a second language course.

For elementary school students, it will now be up to the school and parents to determine whether French or any other language courses should be offered.

Junior high schools will be required to offer at least one second language course, but it won’t be mandatory for students to take it.

Parents received a letter explaining the changes, last week.

Cathy Faber with the CBE says students in Grades 4-6 who are attending a school that made the decision to scrap a second language course will now be allowed to attend a different school that offers an additional language class.
