The Alberta Federation of Labour is reacting to the province’s announcement Wednesday of an action plan to keep Albertans working longer to address expected worker shortages in the future.
Employment and Immigration Minister Thomas Lukaszuk believes an anticipated upswing in the economy and baby boomers retiring could lead to shortages in the range of 77,000 workers within the next decade.
The Alberta Federation of Labour’s Gil McGowan tells 660News, if the plans calls for incentives and support that’s one thing but forcing Albertans to work longer is a dangerous game.
He says Albertans won’t take kindly to having their retirement dreams undermined because employers are having staffing issues.
McGowan says this is a big change being proposed and they’re not convinced the government has consulted enough with Albertans on the issue.
