Globe & Mail endorses Tory party

The Globe & Mail is throwing its weight behind the Conservative party.
But Mount Royal University political scientist, David Taras, tells 660News the announcement probably won’t rock the ballots.
“It does add some prestige to the Harper campaign, but in terms of anything transforming, in terms of the earthquake or bombshell, or something that’s going to remake the campaign, newspapers don’t have that power anymore,” he says.
In an editorial published in Thursday’s Globe & Mail, staff wrote Harper “has built the Conservatives into arguably the only truly national party” and that he is the best option for Canadians.
Editors write, “Only Mr. Harper and the Conservative party have showed the leadership, the bullheadedness… and the discipline this country needs.”
Taras says while Globe & Mail readers tend to be an elite and influential bunch, they’ve probably already made up their minds on who they’ll vote for.
“The election is not held in the pages of the Globe & Mail,” Taras says. “That doesn’t take away from the power of the endorsement, or the prestige it gives, or that there will be some halo effect, but it’s not going to be a great transforming event.”
