Charges pending against WHL hockey player

A 17 year old WHL hockey player remains in Foothills Hospital with non life-threatening injuries following a fatal traffic accident early Saturday morning on Springbank Road, east of Highway 22.

Charges are pending against the teenager but the Calgary Herald reports because charges have yet to be laid and he’s a minor, the young man can’t be named.

An 18 year old female passenger from Regina, aspiring teacher Emily Matthewson, was killed in the single-vehicle crash. Cochrane RCMP believe speed and alcohol were factors.

According to a Calgary Triple A Midget coach, the young local hockey player is “mature and humble.”

He is listed by Central Scouting as a prospect for this year’s NHL Draft.
