Federal leaders cast their ballots

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper cast his ballot in Calgary over the lunch hour on Monday, giving a pleasant surprise to some school children at his polling station at St. Augustine Elementary School.

The Conservative leader did his civic duty in his home riding of Calgary Southwest with his wife, Laureen and his two children by his side.

Harper thrilled throngs of children on their recess when he did an impromptu meet and greet, taking photos and giving high fives.

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff voted around 8:00 a.m. Calgary time in his Etobicoke-Lakeshore riding.

Ignatieff smiled and shook hands with fellow voters as he walked into the polling station.

He appeared somewhat subdued as he got off the Liberal campaign bus, but told 660News he was feeling confident.

Also in the Toronto area, NDP Leader Jack Layton arrived at his downtown polling station pushing his baby granddaughter in a stroller. He was surrounded by family, including his wife, Olivia Chow.

Layton says he’ll watch the results with close friends and family before joining supporters for his campaign party.

Over in the Saanich-Gulf Islands riding near Victoria, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May has been working to mobilize her supporters to unseat Conservative incumbent Gary Lunn.

The Greens are setting up a party headquarters in a hangar at the Victoria Airport to watch as the results trickle in on Monday night.
