Alberta to lead economic growth

Alberta and Saskatchewan will lead Canada’s economic growth this year.

A new report from the Conference Board of Canada says Calgary joins Edmonton, Regina and Saskatoon for the top four spots on the economic leader board for 2011.

Calgary’s growth is pegged at 3.4 per cent. That’s second only to Saskatoon, who along with Regina is benefiting from strong resource development in that province.

Meanwhile, a strong energy outlook has our city poised for greater growth in the coming years.

Economist Greg Sutherland says Calgary isn’t tied solely to commodities, as domestic demand and the construction sector are also going strong.

The metropolitan outlook forecasts better things for Calgary with a growth rate to average at 4.1 per cent in the three years starting in 2012.
