Multiculturalism symposium to be held in Calgary

The majority of immigrants with degrees from foreign universities don’t actually work in their field when they move to Canada.
Statistics Canada reports just 24 per cent end up having a job related to their degree and the Calgary Multicultural Centre is holding a symposium to raise awareness on the issue.
Spokesperson Anoush Newman tells 660News there are many benefits to hiring people with international experience and Canadian companies are beginning to catch on to that fact.
“More and more Canadian institutions and businesses are beginning to understand the benefits of culture diversity,” she says. “They’re trying to integrate new Canadians, but they’re having problems understanding how do you work with somebody from a different culture, what are some of the barriers: cultural barriers, linguistic barriers, communication barriers.”
Newman says the one-day symposium will deal with all those topics.
“Economic Integration of Immigrants: Diversity, Opportunities and Challenges” takes place May 12th at the University of Calgary’s downtown campus.
It features speakers including Employment and Immigration Minister Thomas Lukaszuk and Mayor Naheed Nenshi.
