Dealing with the heat

As thermometers top 20 degrees in Calgary this week, EMS is reminding us to take extra precautions when spending time outside during hot weather.

Stuart Brideaux tells 660News there are two segments of the population that are more susceptible to the heat.

“Children and the elderly do not cope as well as a normal healthy adult with the effects of heat and sun,” says Brideaux.  “Children in particular will begin to feel the effects of heat far sooner than an adult.”

“The number one thing, over and above everything else, is to stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water,” he adds.  “Water is the best fluid to stay hydrated with.  Other things like juice and sports drinks will work, but of course they contain more sugar and that’s not really necessary.”

In addition to being well hydrated, people who are outside for extended periods of time are being told to wear a hat, put on sunscreen and to take frequent breaks, preferably in a shady spot.
