Equine herpes virus found in horse

A potentially deadly horse virus is causing concern for horse owners and agricultural societies across the province.
The equine herpes virus (EHV) has been found in one animal in Alberta and as such, the High River Ag Society has shut down its facility and cancelled two events set for Monday because of it.
Dr. Gerald Hauer, Alberta’s Chief veterinarian tells 660News each show will have to evaluate the situation.
“Not all horse events need to be cancelled because of this, but you need to assess the risk, could they have potentially been exposed to this virus and if it is high risk, it could be prudent to cancel or post-pone events,” said Dr. Hauer
The Calgary Stampede says it is monitoring the situation, but doesn’t believe the outbreak will have an affect on the Stampede.
Dr. Hauer says there is an outbreak of the virus connected to a horse show in Utah spreading in the United States, but the Alberta horse with the virus didn’t go to that show.
