Province allocates $50-million to help Slave Lake victims

Premier Ed Stelmach has announced $50-million in initial aid for people forced from their homes in Slave Lake.

The money will tend to the immediate needs of evacuees, as well as the rebuilding of Slave Lake and surrounding communities.

Stelmach says the funding is an important first step on the road to rebuilding the community and expects the funding to begin flowing by the end of the week.

The funding will initially focus on the immediate housing, income support and other needs of the thousands of evacuated residents.

The province says it’s crucial that residents who have evacuated from Slave Lake and surrounding communities register with the Red Cross by calling 1-800-418-1111 to help them get access to financial support.
