City could test solar powered crosswalks

The city is looking at going green and testing out solar powered crosswalks.
The pedestrian warning lights are already being used in Airdrie and come at a fraction of the cost of regular crosswalks and can fit into smaller locations.
Alderman Shane Keating tells 660News, cost is definitely a factor with the new ones estimated to be about one-tenth cost of the ones already is use.
Alderman Peter Demong says one disadvantage is that they are less visible then the existing ones and he hopes the testing phase will flush out all the pros and cons.
One of the first intersections that could be used for testing is at Douglasdale Blvd and Douglas Park Blvd in the southeast.
Alderman Demong says he will be putting in an application to the city’s Innovation Fund as a pilot project within the next few weeks and if approved, testing could begin by the fall.
