Inquiry begins into Lake Newell death

A grieving mother is hoping for some answers from a fatality inquiry that begins Tuesday into the death of a five-year-old girl during a rescue operation on a southern Alberta lake.

Yvonne Toney tells the Calgary Herald something good needs to come out of the loss of her daughter, Janessa.

She drowned when a Fish and Wildlife boat sent to help the family capsized in September 2008. The boat the Toneys were in hit rocks on Lake Newell.

Janessa’s mom says communication was poor that day and it took rescue crews more than two hours to reach them.
