Roof nearly collapses in northwest

It was a close call last night for a northwest Calgary mom and daughter when their roof nearly collapsed.
District Fire Chief Steve Wilson tells 660News the pair called 9-1-1 after they heard ‘cracking’ in the ceiling.
“They heard some timbers cracking up there. We took pictures after the fact and, yes, it did show evidence that the roof members had splintered and cracked and it was just a matter of time before it did come in. Thankfully it didn’t,” says Wilson.
Thanks to quick action, firefighters stopped that from happening.
They arrived at the home in the two-thousand block of 3rd Ave N.W. to find that the roofers who’d been hired to fix the roof had left heavy stacks of shingles on it.
The old house, built in the 1930’s, wasn’t strong enough to hold the weight, which fire officials estimated at about 3-thousand pounds.
Officials determined that once the shingles were removed it was safe for the residents to go back in.
